Sign of the times for sports clubs

THE Community Sign at the top of Parkes Street at the entrance to Helensburgh is a service administered by Helensburgh Lions Club, providing powerful 24/7 exposure for local sporting groups, while also providing an advertising forum for local businesses.

Local sports clubs have been able to use dedicated panels free of charge to help promote their events, which to date has worked on a summer/winter rotation. The Lions now propose to make these spaces more flexible by scheduling promotions based on specific events at each club. This will increase the administrative workload but is considered a necessary step to ensure the sign remains a powerful community resource.

In the years since it was first constructed, the site has undergone some significant upgrades, first with the addition of a floodlight, then landscaping and more recently being complimented by the adjacent bike/pedestrian track.

Craig Kenworthy from Allure Landscapes (pictured) is currently re-planting the Community Sign, which will reveal itself in the warmer months ahead. Funds for the renovation came from the Shell Community Partnership, with thanks to Terry at Westside Petroleum (Shell, Helensburgh) who also committed an extra $1000 toward similar projects.
